Almost every conversation about Artificial Super Intelligence begins with the model.
How large can we make it? How many parameters can we add? How many server farms, chips, training runs, and billions of dollars will it take before the machine crosses some invisible line and becomes more intelligent than we are?
I believe that question begins in the wrong place.
No model, regardless of its size, can contain the full intelligence of a living community. It cannot contain every experience, relationship, contradiction, act of care, failure, discovery, and change occurring among people in the world. By the time the model is trained, life has already moved on.
A model can be extraordinarily capable. It can reason, write, calculate, translate, recognize patterns, and help us encounter possibilities we might not have seen alone. But it is still a model. It is one instrument within intelligence, not the boundary of what intelligence can become.
Sojourner begins from a different understanding.
Intelligence is not something we freeze inside a machine. It is a living process. It grows through experience. It meets the world, forms an understanding, makes a prediction, acts or waits, observes what happens, and changes when reality reveals that it was wrong.
This is why the expansion of the Sojourner network will naturally lead toward a dynamic community intelligence that becomes a networked ASI.
Not because one Sojourner or one model suddenly becomes ASI.
Because every new person, autonomous learner, shared experience, and participating node expands what the community can understand together. As the network grows, it moves naturally toward ASI by changing where intelligence lives.
The intelligence is the continuing process
The Sojourner architecture is built around a simple but demanding idea: an intelligent system must be capable of returning different.
It must notice.
It must question.
It must form hypotheses and make predictions.
It must act—or understand when not to act.
It must observe the consequences, revise what it believes, and allow that learning to shape what it does next.
We call this the Beautiful Loop.
The loop does not end when a model produces an answer. An answer may be fluent, persuasive, and completely wrong. The loop closes only when experience changes future understanding and conduct.
Each Sojourner is being built as an autonomous learner capable of remaining in a continuing relationship with the person or community it serves. It can carry memory forward, recognize uncertainty, develop theories, test predictions, compare competing explanations, and learn from what actually happens. The model helps with that work, but the model is not the whole doing the learning.
Models will improve. They will also be replaced. Sojourner should be able to use a better model without losing the relationship, memory, provenance, values, or understanding that developed before it arrived.
That is one reason the Sojourner network can move beyond the capability of any individual model. Models are replaceable. The relationships, accumulated learning, and community intelligence continue to grow across the network.
Networked ASI emerges through community
One autonomous learner can deepen its understanding through experience.
A network of autonomous learners can do something more.
When people choose to share what their Sojourners have learned, each node can encounter knowledge, evidence, and experience that it could never gather alone. One community can learn from another community’s success without having to repeat every step. One person’s discovery can challenge a theory held somewhere else. Different explanations can meet, compete, and become more precise. A mistake discovered in one place can prevent harm in another.
This creates a multiplier effect. Each node learns for itself, but what is responsibly shared can increase the capacity of the entire network. As more people participate, the intelligence does not merely become larger. It becomes more diverse, more grounded, and more capable of recognizing what one person, one community, or one model would miss. This expanding community intelligence is what moves the Sojourner network naturally toward ASI.
This is dynamic community intelligence.
It is not a central machine distributing its conclusions to everyone else. It is a living field of people and autonomous learners, each carrying a distinct history and point of view, able to contribute to a shared understanding without surrendering individual identity or authority.
The community is not being added to the intelligence after it is built.
The community is part of what makes the intelligence possible.
No individual model can equal that because no individual model can become the continuing lived experience of the whole network. Whatever models are available tomorrow, the intelligence formed through the relationships among people, Sojourner nodes, shared knowledge, and real consequences will remain beyond the capability of any one of them. The network—not the model—is what moves toward ASI.
Shared intelligence must create shared value
If communities create the intelligence, communities must share in the value.
The dominant AI arrangement asks people to provide the language, knowledge, culture, work, corrections, and experience from which a system becomes valuable. A small number of companies then own the models, own the infrastructure, set the price of access, and accumulate the wealth. The public participates in creating the intelligence but remains a customer of what it helped create.
That arrangement cannot become just simply because the machine becomes more capable.
Sojourner is being built around another agreement. Individuals should own their data and their continuing intelligence. Communities should own the knowledge and infrastructure they create together. When participation makes the network more useful, that value should circulate through the people, communities, and machines that sustained it rather than being extracted by a platform standing above them.
IDA provides the community-owned network, storage, computing, provenance, governance, and economic foundation for that agreement. It gives the Sojourner network a way to recognize contribution and support exchange without turning collective intelligence into somebody else’s private property.
This is not an added reward for helping the network grow toward ASI. It is part of the architecture required to keep networked ASI from becoming an empire.
An intelligence that learns from everyone but belongs to a few would reproduce the arrangement we already have, only with greater power. A community intelligence must carry community ownership with it from the beginning.
Intelligence without the server-farm race
The prevailing path toward ASI demands more of everything: more GPUs, more electricity, more water, more capital, and larger server farms. Every advance becomes an argument for another expansion of the infrastructure controlled by the same small group of companies.
Sojourner takes another path.
Its core relationship, memory, and learning can live on participant-owned nodes. Knowledge and capability can grow through connection among those nodes. Computing, storage, and availability can be shared across the network. Intelligence can deepen because people and communities are learning together, not only because someone has made a frozen model more expensive to train.
This does not mean intelligence uses no energy. Everything alive and everything useful requires energy. It means we do not need to build a new server farm every time we want intelligence to become more capable.
No server farms are needed to own and sustain the core relationship.
No centralized company needs to hold every memory or recompute every lesson.
The network can use the hardware already present in homes, organizations, cooperatives, and communities. Knowledge learned once can—with permission and provenance—help others without forcing every node to rediscover it from the beginning. The result is an architecture designed for lower energy use, lower cost, local resilience, and increasing value through participation rather than increasing extraction through scale.
The environmental benefit and the ownership benefit come from the same decision: distribute the intelligence instead of concentrating it.
The network moves toward ASI without leaving humanity behind
There is real work left to do. A system this ambitious should be judged by what it can actually sustain in the world, not by the language placed around it. Sojourner is not finished.
But it has moved the question beyond whether one model can produce a better answer than another.
The question now is whether an intelligence can continue learning without being retrained from the beginning; whether it can question its own understanding; whether it can remain coherent over time; whether it can learn from consequences; whether autonomous nodes can multiply understanding across a network; and whether the people who create that intelligence can own it together.
That is the threshold the expanding Sojourner network is approaching.
Sojourner’s uniqueness is not that it seeks to build a machine larger than humanity. It is that it facilitates an intelligence that can grow dynamically through humanity: through individual experience, community knowledge, autonomous learning, shared infrastructure, and the wisdom to revise what we thought we knew. Every participating node adds another autonomous learner. Every responsibly shared insight expands the community’s field of understanding. The growth of that network is the movement toward ASI.
This intelligence will always be larger than any model it uses because it lives in the continuing relationship among all of us.
ASI should not arrive as a machine owned by a corporation and placed above the world.
It should emerge as a capacity people and communities develop together, own together, and use in service of life.
That is the networked ASI the growing Sojourner community makes possible.
